A lot of people out there will give negative feedback about Google's Blogger, and most of those feedbackb focus on limited control over SEO! But let me tell you, Blogspot blogs can outperform WordPress in SERP if seo is carefully implemented.

Long time ago, I used to think if I install an SEO plugin on my WordPress self- hosted blogs, automatically, my pages climb up to spot one on search result page. But I got disappointed!

Using SEO plugins such as Yoast on WordPress does not guarantee high ranking. instead, it guides you on how to write an SEO friendly article, use of keywords etc. which is a positive point for WordPress.

But wait! ? Doesn't Content really matter in SEO?

You've heard times without number, that Content is King! Which is why you should not worry too much about plugins. What's needed in a cigarette is the smoke, right? ?

Google knows the importance of SEO, why do they not create room for some folks who want to try their hands on making a plugin that will take care of SEO?

It's simple! They are taking care of everything for their user. Your template contains every code that is needed for SEO, unless you are using a custom template. Even at that, you can still play around with codes if you know how it works.

In fact, all you need to do if you are using Blogger is to focus on content and paying good attention to on-page and off-page SEO while Google takes care of Technical SEO.

how SEO works with Google's blogger

Search Engine Optimization doesn't just happen, it must start from somewhere. Google helps you with the first step by automatically discovering your site and indexing it even without submitting a sitemap on search console.

So, What's left?

Optimizing you contents is left for you...

No one is coming to do it for you, unless you want to hire some SEO guys, who you are most likely to get disappointed with, at the end of the day. So, you have to do it yourself! It's easy..

There are certain places and signals Google looks at before ranking a website, for example; Link structure, keywords placement, content structure etc.

Unless you pay attention to those sections, Google may ignore your site for certain keywords even if you use the almighty Yoast and AIO SEO plugin for WordPress.

For you to properly optimize your blogspot posts, here are some important area to concentrate on.

  • Title tag

  • Meta Description

  • Image Optimization

  • Anchor Text

  • Labels

Use your focus keywords on them and the job is half done.

You may have heard that keywords doesn't count anymore, but that's a bunch of lies! Keywords are very useful in SEO. Even paid search requires keywords, how much more organic search!

Neglecting the use of keywords is the beginning of your  failure! What, in the name of God, do you want to rank for?

If there was no keyword, there would be no search! It's as simple as that.

Now, let's discuss keyword placement...

When using WordPress SEO plugins, you specify the search term you want to rank for, but blogger doesn't ask for that. Search Engines crawl your page and dictate the most used terms and then assume them to be your keywords. So, if you want to rank for any key term you should mind where you place them.

Where should you use keywords?

Use them on the title, first paragraph, image "alt" tags, url, meta description, heading tags, and the last paragraph.

Your focus keyword should not appear less than 5 times on your post.

The title tag:

Page title appears on individual pages of your website, usually at the beginning of the page. It is an element that tell what topic the page covers. In a traditional HTML, titles are wrapped within a  title tag as seen in the sample below

[wpsm_codebox style="1"]<title>page title goes here... </title>[/wpsm_codebox]

Titles are compulsory tags for every page of your website. It does not only tell your readers what they are about to read, Search Engines uses it to display results on search page as seen in the image below.

Apart from that, Title tags can also appear on social media and the browser tabs.

NB: your keywords must be contained in title tag for better results, your title tag must not be more than 60 characters.

Meta Description:

Meta Description does not add any additional value to the readability of your content. Yet,  it is very important for SEO. Meta Description is a small snippet search  engines display directly below the title on a search result.

This is actually what's supposed to motivate searchers to click through and read your contents.

By default, Search engines pulls the description from your content unless you specify one for them!

Follow the steps below to enable Meta Description on your posts.

1. Login to blogger using your Gmail account

2. Click on "settings" > "Search Preferences"

3. Under meta tags, click edit  on "description" and turn ON! And then write meta description for your homepage.

Now you have enabled meta description! When you are writing a new post, head over to "search description" at the right panel and write your meta description!

NB: Meta description should be between 80 t0 160 characters,  make sure you use the focus keywords on your description tag.

Image Optimization:

Images are spices with which you can use to cook up your blog posts. So, it's wise to use it right!

Image optimization is all about reducing the size of an image and using the appropriate "title" and "alt" tags within an image.

Blogger makes it easier for you to archive that. When You upload an image, click on it. Under the image, there will be an option to change the size, edit the image properties, change image alignment and add caption.

The image title and Alt attribute should be under "properties".

NB: Use your keyword on image Alt Attribute.

Anchor text:

When linking pages of your blog together, it is very important to use anchor texts right.

An anchor text is a click-able text of a hyperlink. When you click on it, it takes you to a different page within or outside of your website.

Anchor text in html looks like this:

[wpsm_codebox style="1"]<a href="" >use keywords here</a>[/wpsm_codebox]

But in blogger, you don't have to write it that way. Just highlight the text you want to use as anchor text and click "link" above your post editor.

Avoid the use of naked hyperlink. Eg. it doesn't make any improvements.

NB: Use keywords of the post you are pointing to on your anchor texts.

Wrapping it up

Don't let any negative feedback you get online concerning Google's Blogger poison your mind. Blogger has some limitations, which is true.. But that has nothing to do with SEO!
